LGBT Caucus Poster Session
As a consequence of societal prohibitions against same-sex relationships and rigid gender roles, LGBT individuals and communities face many challenges in both access to health care and health outcomes. Among those challenges are substance use and abuse, sexually transmitted diseases and infections including HIV/AIDS, mental health concerns, hate crimes and violence, and provider attitudes and actions that limit access and hinder appropriate care. Moreover, research data into LGBT populations is frequently limited or missing from national health statistics leading to LGBT populations being left out national and international efforts at eliminating health disparities. This poster session will provide a look at LGBT health care and access needs and research priorities, along with coping and resilience mechanisms of both individuals and their communities.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1)Assess health care needs and concerns of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender individuals and communities. 2)Identify methods and strategies to enhance and increase prevention programs and health care access among LGBT individuals and providers; and 3)Articulate health care research priorities for LGBT populations.
