SOPHE-AAHE Task Force on Accreditation in Health Education: Overview of Origins, Goals, and Activities

The SOPHE/AAHE Task Force on Accreditation in Health Education was charged with the task of developing a detailed plan for a coordinated accreditation system for undergraduate and graduate programs in health education, which will be considered jointly by the AAHE and SOPHE Boards of Directors/Trustees. The purpose of this session is to provide a status report on the work of Task Force and will include four separate presentations. This first presentation will provide an overview of the origin, goals, and activities of the SOPHE/AAHE Task Force on Accreditation in Health Education. The Task Force has convened three times during which it has heard testimony from invited key informants in the field of health education and experts in higher education accreditation. The inaugural meeting was convened in January 2001 and was used to develop priority issues on standards, levels and specialization, philosophy, endpoints, and context. Four subcommittees were created to study 1) credentialing groups inside and outside of health education, 2) professional certification groups, 3) perceptions of health education professionals, and 4) perceptions of chairs of health education academic units. The work of each will be briefly described.
