With the increasing number of nurses leaving the work force, the need for nurses educated to assume leadership roles in public health nursing is escalating; this was the situation identified in Oregon two years ago. A strategic planning group of public health nurse practitioners and nurse educators was formed to address this concern. Out of those discussions, an overall model for seamless education in public health nursing was developed that included increasing the numbers and competence of nurses working in public health. One strategy to meet this need was to modify the current Oregon Master of Public Health, Public Health Nursing track using distance technologies so that qualified nurses anywhere in the state have access to this program. Additionally, the curriculum was modified to increase the leadership content and interdisciplinary experiences to assure the competence of public health nurses assuming supervisory roles. This presentation describes the collaboration that occurred between state and county public health nursing leaders and nurse educators to modify and implement this program. Specific collaborative strategies focuses on student recruitment including the recruitment of students from diverse populations and medically underserved areas, curriculum revision, and future employment opportunities. Development of distance courses for theory, clinical, and practice supervision is also discussed. Lastly, issues that continue to present barriers to students wanting to access advanced public health nursing education are presented.
