The Population of Los Angeles County (LAC) is close to 10 million. There are over 200 district public health nurses (PHNs), whose population-of-interest are based on census tracts. The ratio of district PHNs to population is approximately 1:50,000. Additionally, there are over 300 program PHNs, whose population-of-interest are a target population within LAC. LAC Public Health Nursing (PHN) is shifting its focus toward population-based practice, with an emphasis on primary prevention. This is a shift from the traditional focus on disease control and case management. In an effort to develop a common practice framework focused on population-based principles, a PHN Practice Model was developed. Various educational strategies have been used to facilitate the assimilation of this model into practice. The first training of 2001 was provided to large groups of approximately 100 PHNs at a time. Using a didactic approach as well as small group activities, participants were guided through aspects of the PHN Practice Model. The second training, offered between 6-10 months later, was provided in small group settings to district PHNs to further emphasize aspects of the PHN Practice Model, their interrelationship and relevance to practice. This training used didactic and interactive learning methods. Pre and post data was collected to determine the effectiveness, staff comprehension, and PHNs sense of readiness to participate in a community health improvement plan. Analysis of data regarding trainings for district PHNs will assist in determining emphasis for future trainings. Meantime, trainings and data collection continue for both district and program PHNs.
