Abstract #39507

Enhancing public health nursing competencies through a web-based community health nursing course

Elnora P. Mendias, PhD, RN and Corinne Oppermann, MSN, RN. School of Nursing, The University of Texas Medical Branch, 301 University Blvd, Galveston, TX 77555-1029, 409-772-8258, nmendias@utmb.edu

The nursing shortage and other factors have contributed to more RNs in the public health workforce without formal community health nursing education. This paper describes a web-based course focused on teaching public health competencies to RNs enrolled in an undergraduate community health course. Course development, contents, methods, an empowering course philosophy, technical support needed, challenges and strategies to manage them, and outcomes are presented. The course has been viewed positively by faculty and students alike, despite technological and learning challenges.
