Communities frequently have questions about the extent, nature and origin of radiation. Sources of naturally occurring and man-made radiation in the environment are everywhere.

When questions about radiation hazards arise, the public frequently turns to state, tribal, and local health agencies for answers. For several reasons, these agencies may not be able to respond to these inquires. The questions may involve new or emerging areas, about which little information is readily available. It is clear that there is a substantial need to provide information to public health professionals who serve as an information conduit for communities and individuals with radiation-related questions. However, at this time the extent and nature of the needed information, and the most effective delivery techniques, are not known.

This session will present results from conference calls conducted with state, tribal and local health officials. These calls were designed to assess the radiation information needs of state, tribal and local health agencies, and methods used by health officials to meet those needs. Radiation concerns related to terrorism will also be assessed.

At the end of the session, participants will be able to: 1. Identify the type of questions that health officials are receiving from the public about radiation. 2. Identify the nature, type and extent of information needed by state, tribal and local health officials regarding radiation. 3. Discuss strategies for meeting current and future radiation information needs of health officials and the public.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the session, participants will be able to
