This presentation describes the development of a grant-funded Mental Health Services Program established and administered by Fairfield University School of Nursing. This program was developed in response to community needs in an underserved urban area in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Services provided included screenings for mental health problems, individual, family and group education and counseling, psychiatric assessments and consultation. An Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse directed and coordinated the program and contracted APRN’s who provided services and supervised undergraduate and graduate psychiatric nurses. Curriculum changes integrated community involvement and collaboration facilitated student projects. Overall outcomes for this project are described. In addition, several studies were conducted for specific group services. Group outcomes were measured using a global assessment scale to quantify goal attainment. A prospective longitudinal study was conducted with six urban adolescent self-esteem or anger managment groups in order to evaluate conflict resolution, social support, and interpersonal skills. These research projects are described. Strategies for transitioning services upon termination of grant-funding is presented.
