Abstract #43383

Community Based Primary Care in the South Bronx

Lanny Smith, MD, DTMH, MPH, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, P.O. Box 672444, Bronx, NY 10467, 917-424-4007, lannysmith@yahoo.com and Marcelo Venegas-Pizarro, MD, Doctors for Global Health, PO Box 1761, Atlanta, GA 30031.

Our community based project began with focus groups and community meetings in autumn of 2000. Residents from Montefiore's Residency Programs in Social Medicine and Primary Care, together with other persons from Montefiore and other volunteers from Doctors for Global Health, started working with Highbridge Community Life Center and other local organizations to put themselves at the service of the community. Activities from health fairs to high school programs, from community health teach-ins to community demonstrations about common concerns, have characterized the interaction. Plans with this South Bronx community for training Health Promoters imply yet more concrete action promoting Health and Human Rights.
