Advances in technology present new challenges and opportunities for nursing education to collaborate with the broader community. The Community as Partner model (Anderson and McFarlane, 2000) views community members as active participants in decisions that impact their quality of life. This model is utilized as one theoretical framework in an urban health curricula at a small private university school of nursing. "Healthy Hints" are public service announcements (PSA's) named and collaboratively produced by a partnership between the school of nursing, communication department, student body, nursing center staff, and the local community. These PSA's focus on health issues identified by the community as relevant concerns and have the potential to reach over 350,000 urban viewers of all ages. School of nursing faculty, nursing center staff, students from the school of nursing and community members author, edit, prepare graphics and videotape 60-120 second PSA video productions. Communication department undergraduate students execute operations related to camera and audio components under the expert direction of the station manager. Currently, more than two dozen PSA's have aired multiple times. Topics include inhalant abuse, immunizations, violence prevention and others. Mass media markets, particularly television, offer the greatest potential to reach the largest number of people. Involving the community in the process of PSA video production is a Win-Win approach towards health promotion. Strategies for replication are outlined.
