Paul L. Cummings, MPH and Jeffrey S. Brown, MPH, MSW. Alameda County Public Health Department, 7200 Bancroft Avenue, Suite 202, Oakland, CA 94605, (510) 577 - 7082, pcumming@co.alameda.ca.us

Alameda County, an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse region of 1.5 million residents, has implemented a pilot community asthma initiative. Key components of this project include case management, in-home environmental assessments, local policy development, medical services for uninsured children, clinic quality improvement, and trainings of health care and child care providers. The collaborative includes local governmental agencies, health care providers, and local CBOs. The presenter will discuss how the various components of the Community Asthma Initiative complement each other, and lessons learned including the development of key collaborative partners.

The presenter will also share project evaluation results including the analysis of in home environmental assessments completed with more than 200 families of asthmatic children. The assessments include 25 measures about home maintenance activities that can reduce asthma triggers. Project staff will present results of these assessments and lead discussion on which recommended measures were most frequently implemented by families of asthmatics, which measures most frequently required intervention by families, and which measures were most intractable for families to modify. The presenter will also share project data on perceived and documented improvement in asthma management as measured by asthma hospitalizations and parental self-reports.
