Objective: Describe the effects of a family intervention on the developmental course of alcohol use and misuse in adolescents

Intervention: This study was part of the Child and Parent Relations (CAPR) project which evaluated a home-based intervention program designed to modify parenting skills in order to prevent alcohol misuse among adolescents. The intervention consisted of three in-home sessions and a booster in the seventh grade.

Sample: 1820 students (1595 control, 225 treatment) were included in the final analysis: 27% are prior drinkers, 49% are male, and 44% are Caucasian (the remaining 56% were primarily African American).

Method: Students were followed from fifth grade through tenth grade with yearly assessments of attitudes and behaviors regarding alcohol use and misuse, as well as perceptions of interactions with peers and parents. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to model curvilinear trajectories of alcohol use and misuse with treatment, race, gender and prior drinking status as covariates.

Results: Prior drinkers and Caucasians demonstrate more acceleration in rates of use and misuse during middle school with a significant deceleration in high school. There were no significant differences by gender. Prior drinkers and Caucasians demonstrate consistently higher levels of use; levels of misuse are higher for prior drinkers. Caucasians have a higher rate of increase in use and misuse in middle school. Students in the intervention group report lower levels of alcohol use over time compared to controls. The levels and rates of change for misuse did not differ by treatment group.
