Abortion service constitutes one component of Safe motherhood. Although national safe motherhood program of Vietnam was launched in 1994, it has focused mostly on normal pregnancy care. Abortion care is remaining under-concerned. Currently, Vietnam has the highest abortion rate within Asia and one of the highest rates worldwide, with the MOH reporting approximately 1.000.000 abortions annually. More over, this number is still underestimated due to unreported cases performed by private and illegal service providers. In addition, women with unwanted pregnancy were unable to access safe abortion service by reason of unavailability of clinic service as well as many other complicated social factors, such as gender inequality, disapproval of society on premarital sex. Women are also unsufficiently informed about complication of abortion. The great quantity of abortions in Vietnam and the low quality of care make abortion one of the most outstanding problems of the reproductive health field during the last few years, which needs to be taken into action. This paper is a with the aim of sketching a general picture of actual situation of abortion in Vietnam, figuring out related factors both medically and socially. This paper also presents initial intervention and the strategy for the period of 2001-2010 of the Ministry of Health with the hope of reducing abortion rate in Vietnam, improve the counseling pre and port-abortion and guarantying the quality of service by providing safe abortion for women.
