Abstract #47189

Enhancing School of nursing and community partnerships through Service-Learning

Kathleen M. Nokes, PhD, RN, Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, CUNY, Hunter College, 425 East 25 St. Box 874, New York, NY 10010, (212) 481-7594, kathynokes@aol.com

The Nursing faculty of this Manhattan-based School of Nursing recognized the need to strengthen our community-based curriculum and enhance relationships with community agencies. We decided to use the service-learning model and collaborate with Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCHP), a national organization. There are four constituencies targeted in this project: nursing faculty, community agencies, nursing students and the populations living in the identified communities. As of February, 2002, nursing faculty activities have included: 1) updates at meetings such as the Nursing faculty retreat, Committee, and full faculty meetings; 2) Participation in a two day workshop provided by CCHP; 3) identification of potential nursing courses into which service-learning will be integrated. Community related activities have included: 1) identification of one diverse geographic community; 2) sending letters (N=224) to agencies in that community requesting them to consider partnering with the Nursing faculty: 3) representatives from the 16 agencies have attended planning meetings, CCPH workshop on service learning and scheduled ongoing meetings; and 4) presentations at Community Planning board meetings. Awaiting institutional Review Board final approval, 20 nursing students in the RN to BSN program and Graduate nursing program will participate in a quasi-experimental research study to examine if participation in a 15 hour service-learming seminar impacts on their critical thinking, cultural competency, and civic engagement; 6 hours of that seminar will be offered on-line. Our overarching goal is to increase faculty, nursing student and community partners knowledge on building relationships within communities to promote health, eliminate health disparities and improve quality of life.
