A shortage of public health nurses in the State of Oregon presents a real threat to the well being of Oregon residents. The University of Portland acknowledges the responsibility to prepare nurses for leadership, education, and decision-making positions in community health. It offers a graduate program with course work that emphasiszes population-based care, and prepares students with skills in health care financing, informatics, cultural diversity, and organizational behavior as well as more traditional community health assessment, planning and evaluation. A Nurse Educator Specialty program focuses on preparing nurse educators to meet the need of faculty shortages. The UP options augment programs offered by other univerities (OHSU community health nursing and OSU-OHSU-PSU masters in public health) in the area, drawing on cultural diversity and engaging students in unique applied projects in the community.
