Community Partnerships: Evaluations of a Community Assessment Experience by Students and Community Partners

This presentation focuses on an innovative approach to putting the public back in public health and meeting the health care needs of vulnerable communities through partnerships among community agencies, students and faculty.Methodology:Community health students (n=29)selected a topic of interest for a community assessment and intervention project from a list developed by community partners(n=10) and faculty.Students completed a community assessment with mentoring from faculty and partners.Topics included:asthma,the homeless,prevention of chronic and communicable diseases,breastfeeding,immunizations, lead poisoning and polypharmacy.Results from students' evaluations were:89.7%(n=26)agreed that the experiences promoted cultural awareness; 86.2%reported opportunities to work with culturally diverse health professionals;75.9% reported increased leadership skills; 86.2% reported increased competence in planning community-based interventions; and 93.1%stated improved ability to use the Internet to obtain community data.Evaluations of community partners indicated 100%agreed that the assessments identified health needs, and findings will be useful in program planning and writing grants. Goals to help agency partners meet their community needs, and increase the community-based knowledge and skills of students were met.
