The public health nursing leadership in Oregon identified a gap in the preparation of nurses in county health departments. Many have been educated at the Associate Degree level and lack population-based community health preparation. The State Health Division conducted a survey to document nursing demographics and levels of educational preparation. The need for access to educational advancement for working nurses, especially in rural areas, was confirmed. A partnership was created between three schools of nursing, the Health Division, the Association of Public Health Nurse Supervisors, and the Oregon Public Health Association Nursing Section. This became the Oregon Public Health Nursing Practice and Education Partnership. The goal of the group is to create seamless educational opportunities for nurses to advance their education in public health and population-based care.
