In Vietnam it is recognized that the general maternal mortality rate is 90 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared with 22 deaths per 100,000 live births occurring in hospitals. There is a large gap between the low education or mountainous areas in comparison with delta and urban areas. The five leading obstetric causes of death are: hemorrhage, eclampsia, tetanus, uterine rupture, and post-partum infections. The average number of antenatal visits per pregnancy is 2. The solution to these problems includes 4 cooperative approaches: (1) Eliminate poverty and increase GDP. (2) Organize a network of collaborators of National Committee for Population and Family Planning, community-based distributors, and "For Advancement of Women" clubs of Vietnam Family Planning Association. These clubs make an important contribution to the Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) to women in general, during pregnancy, and with their husbands for improving health promotion skills. (3) Focus the health services system on strengthening human resources, equipment, advocacy, and IEC. Prevention should be stressed at the commune level, and district level facilities should have the capacity to treat obstetric complications. (4) Embed Safe Motherhood in the strategy of Reproductive Health/Family Planning that spans the woman's life cycle. Safe Motherhood in Vietnam has been advancing annually, but much effort remains to achieve the Safe Motherhood indicators identified in the National Population Strategy for the period 2001-2010.
