Special topics in children environmental health

The susceptibility and health implications of children to environmental toxins is increasingly becoming a relevant pubic health issue. Accordingly, there is a need to address the concerns of pediatric environmental health utilizing health education, training of health professionals and research methods. This program, the Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units (PEHSU which is funded by Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, addresses the clinical problems of pediatric environmental health; provides training of health care professionals in environmental pediatrics while educating them about the impact of environmental hazards on children (defined as under age 19). The PEHSUs have succeeded in increasing the awareness of health care providers and the general community to the issues of pediatric environmental and occupational health concerns. The presenter will provide an overview of relevant activities undertaken by the PEHSU sites that relate to current environmental health concerns of children.
