The susceptibility and health implications of children to environmental toxins has been and continues to increasingly become a relevant pubic health issue. Accordingly, there is a need to address the concerns of pediatric environmental health utilizing health education, training of health professionals and research methods. The Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units (PEHSU) addresses the clinical problems of pediatric environmental health; provides training of health care professionals in environmental pediatrics while educating them about the impact of environmental hazards on children. With the incidence of asthma increasing dramatically over the last two decades, asthma management and a basic understanding of indoor pollutants has become special value to childcare providers as well. In an effort to assess post-activity cleaning after renovation and remodeling in old houses, a recent study tests the level of generated lead dust compared to a recommended HUD method and a presented simplified method. Additionally, national agencies like the Girl Scouts of the USA are finding effective ways to incorporate pediatric principles on environmental health protection measures into their programs. This session will discuss the needs as well as the growing research and programmatic opportunities within the field of pediatric environmental health.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participants in this session will be able to: 1) Describe at least 3 environmental threats to children in the United States 2) Describe how renovation and remodeling activities create a lead problem for children 3) Develop / present programs on indoor environmental risks for childcare providers. 4) Identify how national agencies have incorporated children’s environmental health into their agenda.
