The Kit for New Parents, developed by the California Children and Families Commission, is an educational tool for 500,000 new parents in the state of California. The Kit contains five videos, educational brochures, a Parent’s guidebook and a cardboard baby book. An evaluation of the Kit for New Parents was done in order to find out about use and satisfaction with the Kit among parents; the impact of the Kit on parents’ learning and behavior; and the relative effectiveness of distributing the Kit at a prenatal visit, at a delivery hospital, or at home following birth. Two groups of mothers (intervention and comparison) were recruited through 3 types of programs: prenatal centers, delivery hospitals, and home visit programs. All mothers who agreed to participate were asked to fill out a short questionnaire that contained questions about child care, child safety, feeding, and where to find help for certain issues. Mothers at the intervention sites were then introduced to and given a Kit. All mothers were then called six weeks later and asked the same series of questions. There were significant gains in knowledge from the baseline questionnaire to the follow-up questionnaire on many questions for the group that received the Kit. In addition, mothers who had received a Kit had significantly greater knowledge on many questions compared to mothers who did not receive the Kit. Finally, focus groups were done with providers to assess how well the Kit fit into their existing duties and what they heard from parents.
