Distance Learning Certificate in Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology

Carol Hogue, PhD, MPH, Rollins School of Public Health, Dept. of Epidemiology, Emory University, 1518 Clifton Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30322, 404-727-8736, chogue@sph.emory.edu and Karen N. State and local health departments are increasingly required to assume responsibilities for maternal and child health needs assessment and surveillance as well as program monitoring and evaluation. To address this need through professional education, the Rollins School of Public Health is developing a one-year distance learning program leading to a Certificate in Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology. The program builds on the distance learning resources already in place through an existing Career MPH Program. This 18-credit hour program is intended to meet the needs of working public health professionals who already have an MPH degree or advanced training in a quantitative field, but who need to obtain essential training in data-based program planning and evaluation. Students can complete the program of study while continuing their roles in family and workplace. Participants spend two weekends per semester on the Emory campus, and the rest of the semester in web-based education. Coursework includes advanced biostatistics and epidemiology, surveillance, field methods, and maternal and child health epidemiology. Cohorts begin the fall of each year and continue to the end of the following summer, taking 6 credit hours each semester. As part of the coursework, they are required to complete a special studies project in their own agency supervised by faculty. The first cohort of students will enter the program in the fall of 2002.
