Healthy People 2010 Information Access Project

Mary E. Ryan, National Information Center on Health Services Research and Health Care Technology, National Library of Medicine, 8600 Rockville Pike, Mail Stop 20, Bldg. 38A, Room 4S410, Bethesda, MD 20894, (301)435-2243, ryanm@mail.nlm.nih.gov and Stacy Baker, MSEd, Public Health Foundation, 1220 L Street, NW, Suite 350, Washington, DC 20005.

Background: To achieve Healthy People 2010 objectives, public health planners need to consider the latest available evidence on the effectiveness of various approaches. Yet many public health professionals have difficulty and limited time to find scientific journal articles and guidelines on public health strategies. Even experienced users of databases such as PubMed often do not know the best search terms for public health strategies. To address these needs, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) partnered with the Public Health Foundation to pilot the Healthy People 2010 Information Access Project. Librarians and practitioners worked together to develop pre-formulated, online PubMed search strategies around specific Healthy People 2010 objectives. The project aimed to reduce time and increase the precision of searches for evidence-based strategies and guidelines; improve access to NLM's collection of public health literature and databases; and assist practitioners in identifying related online resources.

Presentation: The presentation will demonstrate easy ways to retrieve Healthy People 2010-related research through a NLM web site offering pre-formulated PubMed search strategies and links to evidence-based clinical and community preventive service guidelines. Resources presented address information needs related to 32 objectives in six Healthy People 2010 focus areas: Access to Quality Health Services, Disability and Secondary Conditions, Environmental Health, Food Safety, Public Health Infrastructure, and Respiratory Diseases. Strategies will also be shown for identifying scientific literature and other resources for the remaining focus areas. Presenters will facilitate a discussion on ways to expand the site to serve the needs of public health practitioners and researchers.
