Background: Of the 46 states that created state plans and objectives based upon Healthy People 2000, only 31 states included environmental health objectives. With increased attention to environmental health in Healthy People 2010, increasing state and local capacity to incorporate environmental health objectives into public health plans remains a priority for a coordinated public health infrastructure. In response to these needs, the Healthy People 2010 & Environmental Health online resource was developed to provide easy access to information useful in the development of state and local environmental health objectives and for other environmental health planning projects. This national, public-private effort focuses on the six major topic areas within the Healthy People 2010 Environmental Health Focus Area: Outdoor Air Quality, Water Quality, Toxics and Wastes, Healthy Homes and Healthy Communities, Infrastructure and Surveillance, and Global Environmental Health.
Presentation: We will present brief background information on the environmental health objectives in Healthy People 2010 and why this online resource was developed. We will demonstrate ways public health planners can use tools and resources on the site to plan, track, and achieve Healthy People 2010 environmental health objectives and show examples of state efforts using the Healthy People 2010 environmental health objectives. We will also demonstrate how to quickly access scientific articles and data needed for planning by using pre-formulated PubMed searches on specific environmental health objectives, developed on the site through the National Library of Medicine.
