This extensive education outreach program based on the health belief model will be used to increase senior citizens' awareness. Recent health surveys indicate that the population of seniors is increasing rapidly and West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging major threat to the elderly in the mid-Atlantic regions. As many as 27 confirmed and 23 suspected cases of WNV infection were reported during the 1999 outbreak in Queens, New York City. Reported fatalities resulting from confirmed WNV have occurred mostly among seniors. The purpose of this paper is to share with public health workers the importance of keeping seniors involved in issues that affect their community and environment thus, putting the public back into public health. APHA participants will be informed of ways to advise seniors in prevention and control of WNV, including reduction of mosquito breeding and bites. For this program, a community needs assessment and information gathered from the local vector control unit will serve as the basis for health education of seniors. The study improves use of personal protective measures for outdoor exposures at dusk and at night, and the use of repellants containing DEET.
