The Mid-Atlantic region has been facing a barrage of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. To review these infections and their devastating impact on communities is timely. These presentations will provide session participants with innovative and proven prevention and control strategies that work in real world situations. Putting the public back into public health is typified by extensive community and public sector collaboration needed for these success stories. Many of the arthropod-borne infections flourish in areas with poor environmental sanitation, hence the need to review litter control. This presentation will cover the following topical areas: 1. Public education and Lyme disease prevention in Monroe County: A multi-faceted program using personal protection strategies, tick identification/risk analysis, bi-directional referrals, and vector control; 2. Comprehensive surveillance, and prevention and control measures for mosquito-borne disease and nuisance problems in Monroe County; 3. Characterization of Pathogens of Lyme Disease and Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis in Ixodes scapularis of the Northwestern and Southeastern Corners of Pennsylvania; 4. Implementation of an affordable litter assessment instrument and community survey in an urban setting; 5. Keeping the elderly involved: A West Nile virus health education program for senior citizens; 6. Testing for Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis in Northeastern Pennsylvania; 7. Hantavirus in Monroe County, Northeastern Pennsylvania
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, session participants will be able to: (1) identify innovative and proven prevention and control strategies that work in real world situations; (2) develop an understanding of tick-borne emerging infectious diseases in PA; (3) Assess the risk of Lyme disease based on local or state epidemiological data; (4) Advocate for creation of additional entomological units, as may be needed by health departments, for control of vector borne diseases; (5) Discuss Lyme disease control strategies with the community; (6)Recognize the symtoms and signs of hantavirus disease; (7) Discuss prevention and control of hantavirus; (8) Recognize the critical role played by members of the community in the prevention of West Nile virus infection (WNV); (9) Articulate potential breeding sites and risks of WNV for the susceptible; (10) List five harmful effects of littering on the environment; (11) Describe three environmental factors that effect littering; (12) Identify three social factors that effect littering; (13) Describe three procedures for litter measurement; (14)Design a low cost litter assessment tool for use in measuring the amount of litter in an urban setting.
