Lynne Stevens, MSW, Independent Consultant, 159 West 95th Street, New York, NY 10025, 212-222-9563, lynnes@earthlink.net

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has developed a document entitled, "A Practical Approach to Gender-Based Violence: A Programme Guide for Health Care Providers and Managers." The purpose of this guide is to assist reproductive health facilities to implement universal screening of clients for gender-based violence (GBV), including childhood sexual abuse, rape and domestic violence. The guide describes in detail three levels of intervention, the choice of which depends upon the physical plant, staff capability, referral resources within the community and financial resources of the health care facility or system. The UNFPA GBV project is now being piloted in 10 countries in Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa. This presentation will describe the design and use of the programme guide. In addition, the implementation of the pilot projects and lessons learned thus far will be covered.
