Integrating Gender-Based Violence Responses into Health Care Settings: U.S. Based and Developing World Examples
Integrating gender-based violence prevention and intervention activities into health care settings has been ongoing both internationally and domestically for many years. Yet, the work has often been conducted by two separate groups. There is much that U.S. based advocates, practitioners, health care and social service professionals and others might learn from those implementing similar programs in the developing world. This panel will present examples of programs being implemented both in the U.S. and internationally. The goal is to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and information from the innovative and progressive work that is being conducted in the developing world to those doing similar work in the US. The panel will also analyze what the differences and similarities among the programs reflect in terms of commitments to shared professional, philosophical and political paradigms and the social and cultural structures and milieus within which the work is conducted.
Learning Objectives: Objectives: 1. Describe innovative gender-based violence (GBV) responses and services in US and in developing country settings. 2. Learn about the strategies implemented and obstacles faced by domestic and international GBV programs as they seek to change health care systems. 3. Identify innovations and ideas from programs based outside the U.S. that can be applied to programs and services for GBV inside the U.S.
