Adolescent offenders and their families represent an underserved population in need of health promotion and early intervention services. This presentation will review the major findings of a survey of the physical and mental health needs of 650 male and female juvenile offenders in California. Innovative, community-based interventions for probationary adolescents and their families using public health professionals with interdisciplinary teams throughout Southern California and the United Kingdom will be described. Relevant public health policy issues will be reviewed. Support for the study and projects described was provided by the National Institute of Justice, the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs, and the California Office of Criminal Justice Planning.
