EMERGING AND RECURRENT ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ISSUES IN THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION

Rationale: The Mid-Atlantic region has been facing a barrage of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. APHA 2002 conference hosted in Philadelphia will present a good opportunity to review these infections and their devastating impact on communities. The proposed series of presentations will provide APHA participants with innovative and proven prevention and control strategies, that work in real world situations. Putting the public back into public health is typified by extensive community and public sector collaboration needed for these success stories. Many of the arthropod-borne infections flourish in areas with poor environmental sanitation, hence the need to review litter control. This presentation will cover the following topical areas: 1. Public education and Lyme disease prevention in Monroe County: A multi-faceted program using personal protection strategies, tick identification/risk analysis, bi-directional referrals, and vector control; 2. Comprehensive surveillance, and prevention and control measures for mosquito-borne disease and nuisance problems in Monroe County; 3. Characterization of Pathogens of Lyme Disease and Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis in Ixodes scapularis of the Northwestern and Southeastern Corners of Pennsylvania; 4. Implementation of an affordable litter assessment instrument and community survey in an urban setting; 5. Keeping the elderly involved: A West Nile virus health education program for senior citizens; 6. Testing for Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis in Northeastern Pennsylvania; 7. Hantavirus in Monroe County, Northeastern Pennsylvania.
