Ethics in public health: A new curriculum

Today there is a growing interest in the practical ethical dilemmas and value-laden decisions that arise in public health. This panel will present the work of a collaborative group that has reviewed the main types of ethical issues in the field and has developed a model curriculum designed for use in both educational programs and in-service settings. This group brought together ethicists from the University of Minnesota, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Washington, and The Hastings Center, working in collaboration with the Association of Schools of Public Health. This effort was supported by HRSA, the Greenwall Foundation, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The panel will consist of the following presentations:

1. The presentation of a general framework of principles and issues. Bruce Jennings (The Hastings Center) and Jeffrey Kahn (University of Minnesota)

2. A discussion of the public health ethics curriculum providing background on the strategy of its development and an overview of its content. Lisa Parker (University of Pittsburgh) and Bruce Jennings (The Hastings Center).

3. An in-depth presentation of one curriculum module on Public Health Genetics. Anna Mastroianni (University of Washington) and Jeffrey Kahn (University of Minnesota)
