Menopause has always been a defining point in women's lives. In the last thirty years it has been transformed from a quasi-taboo subject, mentioned only in whispers, to a marketable commodity. As feminists have strived to maintain the view that menopause is another life transition and not a medicalized event, marketers of products, including health services, have focused on it as an end in itself. What this has meant for midlife and older women's health is that the "present orientation" of focusing on menopause neglects the preventive health services of midlife and the healthful attitudes of older life. This presentation looks at women's health after menopause. Using an attribution theory approach it explores why we still ignore the healthful perspectives of older life and why more attention is not given to prevention in midlife.
