Oral
Menopause-Life Transition and Gateway
Although menopause is a unique experience for each woman, the medical system treats it as the same phenomenon for all women and the primary event of midlife. Health workers in the women's health movement have always known this is a reality. Building on information from women's self-help groups as well as recent research this panel will explore how menopause has become medicalized. The panelists will discuss the history of using hormones to "treat" menopause, the research to promote the use of hormones to prevent future disease, the flaws in this research, and the reality of a healthy life after menopause.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session participants will be able to 1) discuss the history of hormonal usage for menopausal women 2) describe how menopause has become a medicalized event in a woman's life 3) recognize that many studies of the use of hormones in menopausal women are flawed 4) learn about the healthful attitudes of older women
