Strategies To Overcome Threats To The Survival Of Hospitals That Serve Vulnerable Populations
This session will deal with some of the survival strategies used by NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation, Cook County Hospital and network, and Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System. An underlying question is how the institutions manage to pay for the cost of caring for the uninsured. Two of the presentations will focus on getting patients enrolled in publicly funded health insurance programs: a) their institutions roles in lobbying for insurance expansions and b) what was done after the insurance expansions passed, to get patients enrolled. The other presentation will talk aout generating revenue through system building activities -- e.g., working with small community hospitals to generate specialty refferals.
Learning Objectives: Learn business and lobbying strategies of three large public hospital systems
