Evidence-Based Decision Making in Public Health: A How-To on Training
Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview:
Public health policy makers and program managers function in an increasingly competitive environment for new and continued program support and for new or increased funding. Even though policies and programs are implemented in the context of organizational culture and politics, they must begin with decisions based on sound scientific evidence. This CEI has a dual purpose. It introduces state health agency policy makers and program managers, public health practice faculty, and continuing education directors to the value, concepts and methods that form the basis of EBDM/PH. It also provides participants with a framework and access to resources on which a partnership among state agencies, academia, and professional associations can organize and deliver a successful EBDM/PH training program. This institute includes 4 presentations delivered by 2 faculty. The presentations focus on providing a topic overview, describing a framework for conducting EBDM/PH, explaining how participants can modify and implement an existing EBDM/PH training program, and providing a forum for discussing strategies and resources. Using a didactic approach via PowerPoint, the faculty will engage participants in a variety of activities: computer assisted demonstrations, participant practice related to Internet searches, Q and A, and case studies.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this institute, participants will know the basic concepts of EBDM/PH and the steps that make up a framework for practicing it. More importantly, they will be provided with a model training structure, resource materials and web site access to a comprehensive course so that they can organize and implement a training program for their colleagues.
