Recognizing that a well-prepared public health workforce will ensure the health of the nation, CDC and HRSA have made an investment to improve the training of the public health workforce. A key component of this investment is the CDC Centers for Public Health Preparedness and HRSA Public Health Training Centers. These centers foster partnerships between academic institutions and state and local public health agencies. The CDC’s National Public Health Performance Standards (NPHPS) Program, the essential services form the basis for evaluating agencies’ capacities and effectiveness will be discussed as a foundation for the evaluation of these training programs. Finally, this presentation will explore the issues, models and science related to determining the impact of investing in the public health workforce on health outcomes. Results of econometric modeling using existing data sets will be presented and recommendations for promising areas for research will be discussed.
Learning Objectives: 1) Recognize the public health competencies related to essential services in training programs and in the National Public Health Performance Standards (NPHPS); 2) Review econometric models that describe relationships among and between individual competency, organizational capacity and health outcomes; 3) Discuss the variables that may influence the implementation of skills learned in training.
