Avedis Donabedian Award Session
The Avedis Donabedian Award session was set up by the Medical Care Section Quality Improvement Committee (QIC) to honor an individual whose work has made major contributions to health care quality measurement, assurance, and improvement -- fields to which Dr. Donabedian devoted his career and gained renown for his insights and achievements. This is the 4th annual award session. Previous awardees were: Drs. Lucian Leape, Don Berwick, and Lisa Iezzoni. This year's award will be presented to Judy Smetzer RN - BSN, of the Institute of Safe Medical Practices (ISMP), who has made pioneering contributions in understanding and preventing medication errors. One of her investigations on the "Denver Nurses" error is a classic article in the medical literature. She meticulously uncovered the "second story" of the fifty system defects behind a fatal error, thereby exonerating the nurses at the "sharp end" who were originally being blamed and prosecuted for their role. (Smetzer JL, Cohen MR, Vogel DP. Medication errors: integrating individual and system accountability. Am.J.Health Syst.Pharm. 1999;56(12):1263).
