Research demonstrates that low-self esteem, substance abuse, violence in the family of origin, exposure to abuse and socioeconomic factors to be some of the risk markers for intimate partner violence. Father Friendly Initiative, a product of the Boston Healthy Start Initiative consortium of consumers, that was established in 1991 as a demonstration program to address issues pertaining to high rates of infant mortality has been serving non-custodial Afican-American and Latino fathers in its Responsible Fatherhood Program. Using data collected at program intake, the Initiative looked at risk markers for intimate partner violence and the relationship between exposure to violence when growing up and patterns of intimate partner violence in later years. The Initiative also compared patterns of intimate partner violence between African-American and Latino fathers. This presentation will focus on preliminary findings of these analyses to provide better understanding of risk markers for partner violence in these communities.
