Since 2001, the Environmental Health Services Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has coordinated several cooperative agreements with the aim of improving capacity in environmental health. Our partners include six Schools of Public Health and five state and local public health agencies. The specific objectives of these projects are to improve the practice of environmental health at state and local levels based on the ten essential services of environmental health, and to improve the knowledge and skill base of practitioners enabling them to better respond to community environmental health problems. This initiative advocates a “systems approach” to create a broad range of sustainable strategies for a more prevention oriented practice of environmental public health. This presentation will focus on the “systems approach” used and the overall goals and successes of the program.
