ASPIRE is an interactive, multimedia smoking prevention and cessation CD_ROM based on the Transtheoretical Model of Change. ASPIRE will be evaluated in a randomized controlled trial of 16 urban highschools. The baseline sample (n=1,447) consisted of 57.5% Hispanics, 35.4% African Americans, and 3.4% Caucasians. This 90 minute session is composed of several presentations which will provide the background theory and rationale for the program, lessons learned during development and initial implementation, and several reports from the baseline survey. Each presentation will last 10 minutes.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the session the participant will be able to:
• Describe the theory development process for ASPIRE: a smoking prevention and cessation CD_ROM program

• Identify media channels that are effectively reaching inner city adolescents.
• To indicate the need for persuading adolescents to help people in their social environment to quit smoking.

• Describe major temptations to smoke among teenagers.
• To discuss the need for better methods of examining nicotine dependence and withdrawal symptoms among adolescent quitters
