Abstract #74652

Case Study in Translating Research into Practice: Violence Against Women

Janet R. Saul, PhD, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4770 Burford Highway, NE Mailstop K60, Atlanta, GA 30341, 770-488-4733, jsaul@cdc.gov

There are many state and local organizations across the country that hold as part of their mission the elimination of violence against women. These organizations are attempting to carry out prevention activities in a relatively “science-free zone” due to a paucity in the literature regarding effective programs to prevent intimate partner and sexual violence. Thus, in the field of Violence Against Women, linking research and practice presents many challenges. During the past 2 years, CDC’s Division of Violence Prevention has attempted to strengthen the interface between research and practice in an intimate partner violence program (DELTA) and a sexual violence program (RPE). Our past and planned activities include: promotion of and training on public health principles (e.g., data-based decision making, multi-level approaches); promotion of lessons from other fields (e.g., tobacco control, HIV prevention); dissemination of effective programs; and evaluations of “reputationally strong” programs in the field. These efforts to promote the use of the best available evidence in program planning and implementation are currently being evaluated. This presentation will: encourage the audience to think more broadly regarding an interface between research and practice, discuss lessons learned during this process, and present recommendations for both research and practice in establishing a more mutually beneficial interface.
