ICEHS Special Session: Case Studies in Translating Research into Practice in Injury Control
This ICEHS Special Session features invited speakers who will describe their challenges and successes in moving from research about injury to implementting practices that prevent injury. Are you curious about, and maybe frustrated by, the links and gaps between what “what we know” and “what we do” in the pursuit of injury and violence prevention? This session is designed as a conversation among three distinguished laborers in this effort and with the audience. Each panelist will present a 10-minute case study which illuminates the successes and challenges of trying to implement programs that are based upon a strong research findings, and will answer three questions: 1) What lessons did s/he learn? 2) How were/are the research questions and funding decisions made? 3) What must be done to accelerate the progress of turning research findings into broad-based programs that actually prevent injuries? The remaining hour will draw upon the assembled experience and insight among panelists and audience for a focused and spirited discussion of these case studies and questions.
Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will: 1. understand the complexities of the effort to turn research into practice in 3 specific case studies; 2. learn from the experience of others on how to fund & implement research findings in the field; 3. pose questions about specific challenges that frustrate or challenge them; 4. find out who is working in this area to facilitate future collaboration.
