Background: HIV infection continues to disproportionately impact the African-American community. Intervention: African-American community members attended a didactic HIV/AIDS prevention training curriculum that includes content on HIV/AIDS epidemic, immune system overview, HIV risk behaviors, behavior change concepts, behavior change interventions, communication and negotiation skills, barriers to prevention in New Orleans African American community, culture and its impact on HIV prevention, and training methods and strategies such as group dynamics, working with communities, and train the trainer methods. The goal of this curriculum is to empower community leaders in their fight against HIV/AIDS. Method: Participant’s increase in knowledge regarding the HIV/AIDS Prevention curriculum was evaluated using a pretest-posttest design. Four (4) tests were developed and utilized to evaluate participant’s knowledge regarding the curriculum. Percent change in pre-test and post-test scores were compared for each item in addition to paired t-test. Findings: Post-test items that had consistently higher scores were in the content domains of epidemiology, immune system, diagnosis/screening, and behavioral theories. Post-test items that had consistently lower scores were in the content domains of transmission and prevention. Conclusions: African-American community leaders have gained knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS prevention training curriculums should emphasize content on HIV transmission and methods of prevention. The core of the curriculum content should focus on transmission and prevention methods.
