Supporting the public health workforce through promoting public health core competencies can be accomplished effectively by assessing staff training and information needs and responding with a staff education plan. In order to determine program staff needs, as well as assess confidence to perform agreed upon core competencies, the AIDS unit of the Philadelphia Department of Public Health created a staff survey assessment instrument that a) identified training needs, b) invited staff to identify questions and information requests, and c) allowed a self-rating for each component. All involved staff were afforded designated time to complete the survey electronically. Results were blinded and tabulated in categories that included self ratings of each component, scoring of likert scales for open-ended questions, and detailed responses to training and information needs. This information was used to create a training plan for the unit. The survey was reapplied the following year and results were compared. Experiences from this process, results from the first two years, and public health workforce implications will be presented.
