Los Angeles County Department of Health Services Public Health has launched a number of new and innovative initiatives during 2003. The foundational initiative has been the Public Health Leadership Institute (LAPHLI), which during 2003 to June 2004 will provide leadership development training to 80 senior public health leaders – the top leadership structure of the Department. The LAPHLI has been designed and implemented by the Center for Health Leadership and Practice, Public Heath Institute, an organization with over 13 years of leadership development experience including design and management of the National Public Health Leadership Institute from 1991-1999. LAPHLI is creating a unique model for public health leadership development. Many of the current leadership development programs are national, regional or statewide. This intra-organizational model features small cohorts (25 – 30), an intensive 2-3 month program approach, with a strong applied learning component – a collaborative leadership change project. The LAPHLI conducted comprehensive evaluations that indicate major benefits to the participants and the organization. The Institute model and evaluation findings will be presented and discussed with session participants.
