BACKGROUND: Health problems caused by exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) can result in illness and up to 53,000 deaths annually in the United States. An estimated 2-13% of cases of ear infections and 16-24% of throat infections in children can be attributed to ETS. Although 72% of Americans believe that ETS causes health problems in non-smokers, little individual action is taken to protect non-smokers. In this paper, the author will describe practical tools used for successful advocacy and legislation related to ETS in Northport, Alabama. METHOD: A literature review was conducted in order to present the facts of ETS. Using the American Cancer Society (ACS), American for Non-Smokers Rights (ANR), and various professional conference tools that worked effectively, the author created an adapted advocacy and educational kit to use in her community. “Communities of Excellence” (ACS), sample ordinances from ANR, and “Collaboration: The Key to Success” presented by Fran Butterfoss, PhD were the primary design influences for the kit that was most effective in the targeted community. The author identified community leaders and enlisted the help of local youth to advocate for change in local legislation. RESULTS: By using the aforementioned tools, approximately 1000 men, women, and children were educated through presentations, city council meetings, and the school system. Within 18 months, legislation was passed in Northport that banned smoking in city-owned buildings. IMPLICATIONS: New public health social work professionals can utilize these versatile tools and positively affect change in their community, workplace, and/or client’s lives.
