EnviroHealth Connections: Integrating interdisciplinary environmental health content & cutting-edge technology resources

Maryland Public Television (MPT), Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Maryland State Department of Education, Johns Hopkins Center for Technology in Education (JHU CTE), and 4 Maryland urban school districts have joined to develop, implement, evaluate & disseminate an innovative model for using environmental health as an integrative context for learning. Specific aims include: 1) Development & cutting-edge dissemination of high-quality Maryland State Standards-based online educational resources for middle school teachers & students on MPT & JHU CTE’s Thinkport supersite at: www.thinkport.org, including interdisciplinary environmental health lessons, an Electronic Learning Community (ELC) at: http://www.cte.jhu.edu/ep/, an award-winning EnviroMysteries: Breaking the Mold video & interactive website at: http://enviromysteries.thinkport.org/, and an environmental health/education technology teacher training video. 2) Development of intensive teacher training programs in environmental health & technology. 3) Provision to schools of an environmental health scientists’ Speakers Bureau.

Currently in the early stages of the project’s implementation phase (Fall 2003 - Spring 2006), we are gathering formative data to help define the program & determine levels of satisfaction with project teacher training programs; assess knowledge & skills gained by teacher participants through trainings & the ELC; and determine effects of implementing integrated environmental health content & technology resources on student motivation and learning.
