A pedagogy of collegiality is a teaching strategy used by a course in the Masters in Public Health (MPH) program at San Francisco State University to maximize student participation. The goal is for every voice in the classroom to be heard. This strategy provides a fresh exploration of the potential for active learning and multicultural education. Active learning is framed here as it connects to the process of working in uneven yet collegial relationships of mutual investment and vulnerability. A pedagogy of collegiality is rooted in the values, experiences, knowledge and interests of the community, that is, the classroom. The relationship between professor and students is examined as a place where knowledge is co-produced. The salience of this pedagogy for public health is in that students and teachers grow as a community, mutually invested in learning from one another. The MPH at SFSU is a unique academic program that uses the cohort model and adult learning principles to actively engage students in solving complex public health problems by linking theory and practice both inside the classroom and in the community.
