Policy and Programmatic Perspectives from Community Voices Miami on Reducing Health Disparities: A Local Approach

Leda, M. Perez, PhD, Director, Community Voices Miami, Collins Center for Public Policy, 150 SE 2nd Avenue, Suite 709, Miami, FL 33131, 305-377-4484, lperez@collinscenter.org

The subject of healthcare inequalities and poor health outcomes among racial and ethnic minorities is receiving renewed attention. Community Voices Miami at the Collins Center for Public Policy is one of eight sites funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to provide local solutions to improved health care access for the uninsured and underserved. In Miami, our work is focused on developing both programmatic and policy solutions to health care access for vulnerable populations. There are clear challenges that Community Voices Miami is working to address with regard to health care disparities: Miami-Dade is the poorest county in the United States; the recipient of high volume immigration; a diverse, but not particularly integrated community. This presentation will focus on some of the local programmatic and policy solutions that Community Voices is developing to help address disparities in health care access for many in Miami-Dade. Moreover, this presentation will offer some possible future direction for how this work may be advanced in other communities.
