Addressing Healthcare Inequalities: Community Perspectives
This presentation provides panelists and participants with an opportunity to discuss the issue of health disparities. A recent published report on health disparities by the federal Department of Health and Human Services originally suggested that health disparities were not a prevalent in communities of color. Since then, the report has been revised to include disparities amongst ethnic communities. The moderator and presenters will provide racial/ethnic, socioeconomic and geographical factors that contribute to health disparities. Three presenters will provide information on different approaches and strategies to reduce health disparities. These approaches and strategies include recent developments in public policy as well as programs and practices that address health disparities.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to (1) describe the racial/ethnic, socioeconomic and geographical factors that contribute to health disparities; (2) present examples of what organizations are doing locally and/or statewide to reduce health disparities in communities of color.
