Session: Breast Cancer Screening Across the Continuum of Care
5144.0: Wednesday, November 10, 2004: 12:30 PM-2:00 PM
Oral
Breast Cancer Screening Across the Continuum of Care
This panel will describe breast cancer screening across the continuum from screening patterns to interventions. Mammography patterns will be identified using national and state-wide surveillance data that describes asymptomatic, high-risk, and cancer survivor populations. The influence of individual level interventions to encourage women to be screened according to current guidelines will be addressed, and there will be a discussion of the efficacy of screening mammography in the medical community will be examined in light of recent mass media attention to screening behavior.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to: (1) Articulate differences in breast cancer screening among asymptomatic, high-risk, and cancer survivor populations; (2) Identify different domains of measuring adherence and discuss where improvements in screening implementation could decrease late-stage cancer incidence in diverse populations; (3) Understand the effectiveness of booster intervention doses to promote second mammograms; and (4) Learn that exposure to media and confusion about cancer recommendations in general does not appear to change women's mammography behavior.
